04.08.2024
The highly anticipated Tesla Model 2, an affordable entry-level electric car, is set to launch in the first half of 2025 as confirmed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during a recent financial results call. In lieu of unveiling the Robotaxi product, Musk announced a delay to make necessary improvements, hinting at a potential sneak peek of the Model 2. Production of the more affordable model is slated to commence in early 2025 using a combination of elements from Tesla's next-generation platform and existing architectures. While this approach may not offer the anticipated cost reduction, it will enable Tesla to scale up vehicle volumes more efficiently, leveraging their expected maximum capacity of nearly three million vehicles and striving for over 50% growth in production by 2023 without requiring new manufacturing lines.Positioned as an accessible addition to Tesla's current lineup, the Model 2 will be the smallest electric vehicle from the company yet, aiming to be priced below the base Model 3. Early teaser images suggest a design akin to the Model Y SUV and Model 3. Expected to rival traditional family hatchbacks, the Model 2 is projected to have a compact size with a sleek rear roofline and spacious luggage capacity. While it's been speculated that the car might be named Model 2, Tesla has not officially confirmed this. Elon Musk indicated that knowledge from various existing models like S, X, 3, Y, the Cybertruck, and the Semi will be utilized in the new platform. The upcoming Model 2 is expected to offer a significantly lower starting price compared to the Model 3, expanding Tesla's reach in the market and potentially competing with other electric hatchbacks like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Chinese models from companies like MG and BYD.Tesla's plans for the Model 2 include utilizing cost-efficient manufacturing processes like the 'unboxed' method and potentially incorporating lithium-iron phosphate cells and 'cell-to-chassis' installation technology. The company aims to reduce the cost of ownership for the Model 2 over five years compared to other models, offering a more budget-friendly option in the electric vehicle market. As Tesla works towards its vision of producing over 100 million vehicles by the end of the decade, the Model 2 could play a significant role in achieving this goal. In the meantime, customers excited for the Model 2 have other excellent electric car alternatives to consider.
