Mercedes CLA set for unveiling as ‘entry luxury’ model with hybrid and all-electric variants
02.10.2024
Recently, Mercedes released sneak peeks of the upcoming CLA, hinting at an exciting new era of technology for the brand. Drawing inspiration from the 2023 Concept CLA Class, the next-generation CLA is set to challenge the Tesla Model 3. The prototype showcased in the teasers made its debut at the Festival d'Hyères in France, highlighting design elements such as headlights and the signature 'panamericana' grille adorned with the iconic three-pointed star. While staying true to its predecessor's sleek proportions and roofline, the new CLA also features rear lights reminiscent of the Concept CLA Class.
The CLA is a key addition to a new range of 'entry luxury' vehicles built on the MMA platform, emphasizing electric drivetrains and hybrid capabilities. Upcoming models will include updated versions of the GLA and GLB SUVs, as well as the CLA Shooting Brake. In response to worldwide demand, Mercedes has opted not to introduce a new A-Class hatchback.
Mercedes is diversifying its vehicle lineup in light of decreased electric vehicle demand, offering a mix of electric and combustion engine models. Chairman Ola Källenius is committed to giving consumers options, including electric cars, high-tech combustion engines, and plug-in hybrids. The upcoming 2025 Mercedes CLA saloon is set to be cutting-edge, with safety features that surpass even the S-Class. Engine choices will span from mild-hybrid four-cylinder petrol engines to powerful V8 engines for AMG fans.
The upcoming compact Mercedes model will come with the Mercedes Operating System (MB.OS), which will improve connectivity, infotainment, and autonomous driving features. Mercedes has been granted regulatory approval for Level 3 'eyes-off' assisted driving in Germany and certain states in the U.S. The next CLA will boast cutting-edge technology such as cameras, LiDAR, sensors, and backup steering and braking systems.
The CEO of Mercedes is confident in the upcoming automated driving system in the new CLA, which is set to outperform current assistant systems. Priced at just under €60,000, the electric CLA will rival the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2. The vehicle will incorporate an 800V electrical architecture for quick charging capabilities and is estimated to have a range of over 740 kilometers.
Mercedes is preparing for a major product launch between 2025 and 2028, kicking off with the CLA built on the MMA platform. The company is ready to take on the electric vehicle market with its bold plans for the future.
