MG ES5 successor to ZS EV, set for UK launch in 2025

18.10.2024

MG has officially introduced the MG ES5 as the successor to the ZS EV, a completely revamped, all-electric compact SUV. This new model is based on the award-winning MG4 hatchback platform and showcases a distinct appearance compared to the recently released MG ZS. Images of the ES5 have been shared on MG's Chinese social media platforms, although it has not been confirmed if this will be its official name in Europe. According to UK product chief David Allison, the new model will not retain the ZS EV moniker.

The ES5 bears a clear resemblance to both the MG4 and MG Cyberster electric roadster, featuring a softer front design with slim headlights, black cladding around the wheel arches, and roof rails for a rugged SUV appearance. The iconic chrome MG octagon badge is prominently displayed on the front, along with an air intake on the bumper to cool the motors and batteries. The rear of the ES5 boasts a wide light bar and Y-shaped tail lights, inspired by the design of the MG4.

Inside, the new ES5 flaunts a minimalist design with larger screens compared to previous MG models. A prominent touchscreen dominates the dashboard, accompanied by an additional display behind a slightly squared-off steering wheel. The interior features fewer physical buttons, with a small control row on the central console, a wireless charging pad, and cup holders.

Measuring 4,476 mm in length with a 2,730 mm wheelbase, the ES5 is 162 mm longer and 149 mm wider than its predecessor, the ZS EV. It is also slightly wider and lower, with dimensions of 1,849 mm width and 1,621 mm height. Allison aims for a starting price below €35,000 for the ES5, positioning it as a more affordable option compared to competitors like the Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30, or the Hyundai Kona Electric. However, final pricing will be confirmed closer to the launch date to stay competitive in the evolving market.

Sharing the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) with the MG4, the ES5 is expected to offer similar battery and motor configurations. The longest-range model is projected to surpass 480 kilometers per charge, with most variants featuring a single motor driving the rear wheels and the potential for all-wheel-drive options.

Allison also revealed plans to use the MSP platform for a mid-size electric SUV set to launch in the UK in 2025, serving as a larger alternative to the ES5. This upcoming model, replacing the MG Marvel R in Europe, will cater to customers seeking a more spacious EV and will compete with models like the Skoda Enyaq, Renault Scenic, and upcoming Kia EV5.
