New BMW M app turns your car into a drag racing timing tool

17/12/2025

BMW is turning its cabin into a cockpit for competition. A new suite of M-branded in-car apps lets drivers time drag launches, monitor detailed performance metrics and binge motorsport content — all from the iX3’s infotainment screen. These features are exclusive to M Sport and full M variants of the new iX3 and planned Neue Klasse models, and they’re designed to make every run feel like a track day.

At the heart of the package sits the M Drag Meter, a purpose-built drag racing tool. It records driver reaction, acceleration profiles and quarter-mile performance, and even reproduces the iconic “Christmas tree” starting lights used at real drag strips. With the iX3 50 xDrive sprinting to 0–100 km/h in a brisk 4.9 seconds, that data becomes exciting — and useful. The app supplies clean, timestamped runs so drivers can compare launches, refine their technique and understand how traction control, launch mode and surface conditions influence results. For those who chase corner speed rather than straight-line bursts, M Cockpit transforms the display into a cluster of advanced gauges and telemetry.

It visualises tyre pressures and temperatures, shows lateral and longitudinal G-forces, and provides live throttle and brake percentages. Engineers’ metrics are presented in a way that encourages experimentation: you can watch the effect of different driving styles on tyre temps lap after lap, or confirm whether a suspension tweak altered weight transfer. It’s telemetry without needing external hardware — all integrated into the car’s software. When the car is stationary there’s a third element: M Channel. This curated media hub streams M-branded videos ranging from how-to tutorials to historic motorsport highlights. It’s aimed at charging stops, passenger entertainment or downtime between errands — especially handy given the iX3’s rapid charging capability, which keeps wait times minimal. Content is tailored to enthusiasts, offering tips on vehicle setup, behind-the-scenes looks at racing operations and highlight reels that celebrate the brand’s competition pedigree.

These features are bundled under a BMW Digital Premium Package priced at €351, selectable during the vehicle configuration or available later via over-the-air download. Installation is straightforward, and the apps integrate seamlessly with the car’s native systems so drivers don’t need extra devices to access telemetry or media. Availability is staged with the first deliveries of the iX3 due in March 2026, when the M apps will arrive on launch vehicles. BMW has also expanded its mobile ecosystem with a specialised M Community segment meant to connect owners and fans. That social hub acts as an enthusiasts’ forum and a news feed for the latest model launches and events; however, it will be limited to the German market at rollout, so international fans should expect regional differences in access. The suite reframes what modern performance cars offer: beyond raw acceleration figures, it emphasizes data-driven fun and social sharing.

Whether you want to obsessively log launch reactions to shave tenths of a second, monitor tyre behavior through spirited canyon runs, or simply stream a classic race while the car recharges, these features make the driving experience more interactive. For prospective buyers weighing an iX3 or another compact performance SUV, these digital extras highlight how software now complements hardware in extracting performance and entertainment value. The result is a car that isn’t just fast on paper but designed to teach, entertain and connect drivers — turning everyday journeys and weekend blasts into measurable, repeatable experiences.
