New MG IM5 has the Tesla Model 3 beaten on price and range

18/07/2025

MG has officially unveiled its contender against the Tesla Model 3, introducing the all-new IM5. This exciting debut took place at the exhilarating Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the IM5 stole the show as a stunning all-electric saloon that promises to redefine what we expect from electric vehicles. Alongside the IM6 SUV, the IM5 is set to be hailed as one of MG’s most groundbreaking offerings yet, ever eager to captivate enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.

What truly sets the IM5 apart from its MG siblings, such as the MG4 and MGS5 EV, is its clever naming strategy. The 'IM' prefix signifies its connection to IM Motors, a premium electric vehicle brand under MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor, based in China. Although the IM brand was initially intended to launch independently in Europe, MG has decided to market these electrifying machines as high-end models that elevate the MG experience. In all markets, the IM5 and IM6 share a strikingly similar design philosophy, characterized by a sleek, aerodynamic front end, flowing lines across the body, and a striking rear lightbar that adds modern flair.

Offering variety and performance, the IM5 will come in three distinct variants: Standard, Long Range, and Performance. The entry-level IM5 Standard is poised at a price tag of €46,000, making it a competitive option against the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, coming in €640 cheaper. The Long Range variant starts at €52,880, while the Performance model is priced at €56,180, catering to those seeking the pinnacle of electric driving excitement.

Under the hood, the IM5 Standard is outfitted with a robust 75 kWh battery, granting it an impressive range of up to 655 kilometers. Meanwhile, the Long Range model boasts an expansive 100 kWh battery, delivering a staggering 711 kilometers—six kilometers more than its Tesla counterpart, the Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive. However, the Performance variant has a different set of priorities; while still featuring a 100 kWh battery, its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system results in less efficiency but exhilarating performance. With an innovative 800V architecture, the IM5 can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in an astonishing 17 minutes, hitting a maximum charging rate of 392 kW.

In terms of power, the single-motor 100 kWh variant in other markets generates an electrifying 402 hp and 680 Nm of torque, sprinting from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. For those craving sheer power, the dual-motor Performance model combines a formidable rear motor generating 498 hp with a front motor offering 268 hp, resulting in a jaw-dropping total of 767 hp and rocketing from 0-100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. To enhance maneuverability, rear-wheel steering reduces the IM5’s turning circle to an impressive 9.9 meters, combining agile handling with exhilarating speed.

MG has clearly focused on delivering an exhilarating driving experience with the IM5. David Allison, Head of Product and Planning at MG, emphasized that the model is engineered for “exhilarating performance and dynamic handling,” blending a digital chassis with potent acceleration that fans of the brand will surely appreciate. We’re hopeful that MG has gleaned invaluable insights from the MG4 XPower, as while the single-motor MG4 surprised with its driver engagement, the dual-motor XPower version fell slightly short.

Step inside the IM5, and you’ll find a sleek, minimalist interior defined by expansive screens. A dazzling 10.5-inch touchscreen sits front and center on the console, complemented by an enormous 26.3-inch infotainment display perched atop the dashboard. Every IM5 features a panoramic roof, providing an airy feel, as well as a premium 20-speaker sound system enhanced by double-glazed windows for an immersive auditory experience.

As anticipation builds, the IM5 saloon is expected to hit European showrooms before the end of the year, standing tall not only against the Tesla Model 3 but also the Kia EV4 and BYD Seal. The electric revolution is here, and with the IM5, MG intends to light the way!
