Electric Range Rover Sport spotted testing in Germany ahead of 2025 launch

05.10.2024

The Range Rover Sport is set to launch a fully electric version, with testing currently underway for a planned release in 2025. Following the introduction of the all-electric Range Rover next year, the Sport model will also offer an electric option. The current-generation Range Rover Sport, which was first released in 2022, features the versatile MLA-Flex platform that can accommodate mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. The upcoming Range Rover Electric will showcase the capabilities of this platform in a large, electric SUV form.By 2026, two additional all-electric Range Rovers will be unveiled to replace the current Evoque and Velar models. These new vehicles will be built on the Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) at the manufacturing plant in Halewood, Merseyside. In contrast, the MLA-Flex platform cars will continue to be manufactured at Solihull, alongside their traditional petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid counterparts.Despite the shift to electric power, the design of the all-electric Range Rovers is expected to closely resemble their internal combustion engine counterparts. Recent spy shots suggest minor exterior changes, such as a more discreet grille, while the Sport Electric prototype showcases 22-inch alloy wheels and a full roll cage, indicating its performance-focused testing at the Nurburgring race track.

The back of the vehicle includes standard features, without any exhaust tips sticking out like in the petrol and diesel models. The MLA platform was specifically created for electric power, ensuring that the new battery pack won't take up space in the cabin. Details on the battery specifications for the Range Rover Electric or Sport models have not yet been shared. However, with 800V charging capacity, a 10-80% charge can be achieved in just 30 minutes. While Range Rover hasn't disclosed the range for their electric models, it is expected that the Sport Electric will have a large battery. Despite the SUV's drag and weight, performance similar to the traditional engine version is anticipated. It is unclear if Range Rover will use BMW's electric motors, despite a prior agreement in 2019. Given Range Rover's history in off-roading, it is likely that the Sport Electric will have a dual-motor setup for all-wheel-drive capability.
