Lamborghini unveils the new Temerario, a 907-hp plug-in hybrid
17.08.2024
‟The introduction of the Temerario represents a significant shift for Lamborghini, as it replaces the Huracan and moves from V10 power to embrace turbocharging and electrification. This new model is equipped with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft, allowing it to compete with the performance of the Urus SUV while offering a higher redline and a more aggressive sound. Generating 789bhp between 9,000rpm and 9,750rpm, and 730Nm of torque between 4,000rpm and 7,000rpm, this 4.0-liter 'hot V' engine can rev up to 10,000rpm, providing a thrilling driving experience for enthusiasts. Lamborghini's chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, promises a powerful and engaging sound that will delight drivers as they push this supercar to its limits. The Temerario is a plug-in hybrid supercar and serves as Lamborghini's second High-Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV), following the Revuelto. It features three electric motors, each producing 148bhp. The first motor is integrated into the V8 engine housing, delivering 300Nm of torque and reducing turbo lag. The other two motors, located on the front e-axle, combine to produce 295bhp and 2,150Nm of torque, making the Temerario an all-wheel-drive vehicle with torque vectoring for improved handling. The complex drivetrain results in a total output of 907hp, enabling a top speed of over 338km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 2.7 seconds. The gearbox is positioned behind the V8 to accommodate a 3.8kWh battery focused on enhancing performance rather than providing electric-only driving. Nevertheless, the car can operate in zero-emissions mode, with CO2 emissions up to 50% lower than the Huracan. The battery can be charged by the V8 engine or a 7kW domestic charger. The new gearbox in the Temerario is lighter and more adaptable than the seven-speed unit in the Huracan, thanks to e-motor integration. Rapid shift times and sequential downshifting are possible by simultaneously holding the left steering wheel paddle and pressing the brake pedal. There are 13 driving modes available, with options for managing hybrid energy flow and unleashing the full 907bhp power with torque vectoring and aggressive gearshifts in 'Corsa' mode. The exterior design is an evolution of Lamborghini's mid-engined styling, featuring a new daytime-running light signature and geometric hexagonal motifs. Inside, the dashboard includes three displays: a 12.3-inch instrument panel, an 8.4-inch infotainment screen for the driver, and a 9.1-inch unit for the passenger. The software integrates with the optional Lamborghini Vision Unit (LVU) camera system for safety features and lap telemetry recording. The cabin of the Temerario offers more space and practicality than the Huracan, with increased head and legroom and improved visibility. There is storage space behind the seats and a front boot with a capacity of 112 liters, 12 liters more than the Huracan. The car provides extensive customization options, with two new colors at launch and over 400 shades available, as well as special liveries and various wheel designs. Carbon-fiber elements can be added, such as a front splitter, side-mirror caps, instrument cluster, air vents, and steering wheel. A lightweight package, Alleggerita, will also be available, reducing the car's weight by over 12kg through lighter body components alone, which can be increased to over 25kg with specific interior trim and carbon-fiber wheel rims. Pricing for the Temerario has yet to be announced, but with the advanced technologies involved, it is expected to be higher than the Huracan, with an estimated starting price between €320,000 and €350,000. The design lead of the Temerario discusses the journey from initial sketches to the final production of the supercar. When designing a new mid-engined Lamborghini compared to something like the Urus SUV, the focus is on ensuring each model has its own distinct character. With the Temerario, every feature, inside and out, was crafted to maximize driving enjoyment. The silhouette is key, embodying Lamborghini's design DNA and embodying adrenaline. It is crucial that Lamborghinis are recognizable from a distance, achieved through elements like the side profile and the futuristic rear, reminiscent of a spaceship. One influence was the 1974 Lamborghini Bravo concept, particularly its unique block-like taillights. Working with engineering on this sophisticated powertrain was a challenge but also an opportunity, especially in creating one of the fastest vehicles Lamborghini has ever produced. Despite the challenges of keeping the car compact, particularly with the twin-turbocharged V8 requiring outlets for heat dissipation, the design team successfully balanced functionality with a puristic design.Sketching is a constant part of the design process, even for a design director, and elements like the hexagonal motifs on the Temerario began as sketches. The car's design journey reflects a collaborative effort between design and engineering, resulting in a high-performance supercar that harmoniously blends form and function.‟
