New Ferrari F80 revealed to take on McLaren in the Hypercar battle
21.10.2024
The latest hypercar from Ferrari, known as the F80, has been revealed as a groundbreaking innovation in both technical and design aspects. This highly anticipated release follows the tradition of iconic models such as the F40, F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari, setting the stage for the brand's future. Featuring cutting-edge hybrid powertrains and advanced aerodynamics inspired by motorsport, the F80 is priced at around €3.6 million with taxes included and limited to 799 units. Despite all units being already sold out, deliveries are expected to commence in late 2025.
The F80 hypercar stands out from Ferrari's exclusive V12 Icona models and custom creations. Instead, it serves as a technological preview for upcoming production models, boasting a unique carbon fibre chassis and cutting-edge mid-engined hybrid powertrain. With a total output of 1,183 horsepower, the powertrain combines a 3.0-litre V6 engine with two turbochargers and five electric motors. The V6 engine, inspired by Ferrari's F1 and 499P race cars, produces 887 horsepower and revs up to 9,200rpm, delivering a distinctive sound reminiscent of a ‟baby V12.‟
Ferrari's V6 engine is equipped with two electrically-assisted turbos that sit on top of the engine, improving response with the help of small electric motors placed between the turbine and compressor. This setup allows Ferrari's engineers to operate at very high boost pressures, a technology reminiscent of the latest models from Porsche and Mercedes-AMG. Notably, the F80 is the first to feature two electric motors on a single engine. Additionally, there is a starter generator motor located beneath the engine that provides extra torque at low RPMs. Both the V6 engine and the starter generator motor are linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission located at the rear axle.
The F80's all-wheel-drive setup is driven by two extra 139-horsepower electric motors placed on the front axle, allowing for active torque-vectoring. These motors, along with the rest of the electric system, are powered by a compact 2.28kWh battery pack located at the back of the seats. This battery pack is recharged through regenerative braking and the engine, eliminating the need for external charging. All electrical components in the F80 are brand new and developed internally, resulting in improved efficiency and reduced weight. Despite these advancements, the F80 is approximately 40kg lighter than the LaFerrari, boasting a dry weight of 1,525kg.
The F80's performance numbers are truly impressive: it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.15 seconds, hits 200 km/h in 5.75 seconds, and is electronically limited to a top speed of 350 km/h. Comparisons with the McLaren W1, which boasts 1,284 horsepower from a 4.0-litre V8 engine, are unavoidable. Although the W1 has more power, it takes 2.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h, slower than the F80 due to its rear-wheel drive setup. The McLaren reaches 200 km/h in 5.8 seconds, indicating it may close the gap at higher speeds.
The F80 boasts a technologically advanced chassis and aerodynamics system. Its structure includes a carbon fiber cockpit and engine compartment cell, along with aluminum subframes that support the majority of the suspension components. The suspension utilizes pushrod technology and 3D-printed arms, as well as a cutting-edge fully active roll control system from Multimatic. This system employs electric motors on the suspension arms to minimize body movement and manage dive and pitch. Additionally, the F80's aerodynamic package produces an impressive 1,050kg of downforce at 200 km/h, adjusting to speeds to ensure optimal load distribution in every corner.
The active rear wing and underfloor aero management system on the car improve its aerodynamics. Taking cues from Formula 1 cars, the F80 model includes a driver's seat set slightly higher to enhance the front aero duct's aggressiveness. Additionally, the cockpit is narrower with staggered seats. The brakes have been updated with CCM-R composite material and large Brembo six-piston calipers on the front axle. For the first time, Ferrari's F80 is equipped with custom carbon-fibre wheels.
The F80 has been designed by Chief Designer Flavio Manzoni and his team to have a blend of futuristic and retro elements, drawing inspiration from sci-fi and classic Ferrari designs. The front of the car includes a black facia, hidden headlights, and large intakes, with a flat front wheelarch reminiscent of the F40. The iconic NACA duct, a nod to Ferrari's aeronautical history, is reimagined on both sides of the cabin. Inside, the cabin features an asymmetrical layout that separates the driver from the passenger, and the information display is mounted on the steering column for easy access.
The Ferrari F80 marks a revolutionary shift in Ferrari's hypercar range, fusing state-of-the-art performance, design, and technology. This groundbreaking vehicle will lead the path for upcoming Ferrari models, establishing unprecedented benchmarks in hybrid performance and automotive innovation.
