New MINI John Cooper Works arrives with a Bang

04.09.2024

Get ready, fans of hot hatch cars, because the new MINI John Cooper Works is set to be revealed this autumn. For the first time ever, you will have the choice between petrol or all-electric power for this model. The JCW PROtotype versions have been turning heads this summer, with the petrol prototype winning its class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The electric version made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, showcasing its capabilities alongside other electric hot hatch cars like the Alpine A290. This signals a bright future for these types of vehicles.

The camouflage design of the JCW PROtotype is a tribute to the classic Mini rally cars of the 1960s, specifically the one driven by Paddy Hopkirk to win the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally. The inclusion of the number '37' on the prototype is a homage to this legendary vehicle.

Evidence of alterations made for the JCW can still be seen, such as the chequered-flag design on the grille being more open for enhanced cooling. The traditional round headlights of the standard model have been retained. The wheel arches have been widened, and the back boasts a dual roof spoiler above a single prominent exhaust pipe positioned in the middle of the dynamic rear bumper. Additionally, the customizable tail-light panels seen on the latest MINI Cooper have been incorporated.

The petrol MINI JCW is projected to utilize a highly tuned version of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine from the MINI Cooper S, which produces 201bhp. It is expected that the JCW could receive a similar power increase, potentially reaching close to 250bhp. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that a manual transmission will be available, as the MINI Cooper currently only offers a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The all-electric MINI John Cooper Works E is anticipated to feature the same 54.2kWh battery as the MINI Cooper SE, providing an estimated range of around 40 kilometers. It is likely to be front-wheel drive, similar to its competitor, the Alpine A290. However, the possibility of a dual-motor setup and four-wheel drive configuration has not been dismissed.

All in all, the MINI JCW seems to be on track to become a remarkable performance vehicle.
