The price in the advert is only the start. A vehicle on Cyprus plates costs the purchase price plus shipping, optional marine transit insurance, customs clearance, any import duty, 19% VAT, registration and the MOT. Which of these apply and how large they are depends on three things: where the vehicle is now, where it was built and how old it is.
From the UK you do not pay British VAT. The 20% included in a dealer's price is reclaimed from HMRC, so you pay VAT once, in Cyprus. Import duty is zero on a UK-built vehicle when its origin is proved on the declaration, while a model built elsewhere pays around 10% of the CIF value. On Japanese-built vehicles the duty is being phased down under the EU–Japan agreement. Excise duty on vehicles was abolished in Cyprus in 2019.
Used vehicles from outside the EU must be under five years old for normal registration. Once registered, road tax is charged every year on CO₂, from nothing on a fully electric model up to a cap of €1,500.
