Honda’s new Prelude prototype has been seen testing in Germany, marking a major comeback for the celebrated two-door coupé, with a full release expected in 2026. This fresh sixth-generation model will arrive 25 years after the previous Mk5 was discontinued. The new Prelude, close in design to the concept revealed last year at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, sports a streamlined and athletic look. Even through the camouflage, some design elements are clear—like the thin slat linking the slim headlights, sleek flush door handles, a large rear window, and what is likely a rear-spanning light bar.
Under the hood, Honda has confirmed a hybrid powertrain, though specifics remain under wraps. Chief engineer Tomoyuki Yamagami highlighted that this Prelude represents the latest evolution of Honda’s hybrid technology, built on 25 years of dedicated research and development. The setup could resemble Honda’s ‘e:HEV’ hybrid system currently used in the Civic, pairing a 2.0-liter direct-injection petrol engine with two electric motors for the front-wheel drive. A small 1.05 kWh battery offers an added boost for quicker acceleration and allows short, electric-only trips around town. While the Civic generates 181 bhp and 315 Nm of torque (reaching 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds), the Prelude may receive some extra power for a sportier feel.
Yamagami also confirmed that while the Civic Type R’s 324 bhp turbocharged engine could technically fit into the Prelude, no high-performance variant is currently planned. However, insights from the Type R’s engineering have contributed to the Prelude’s chassis dynamics.
