New Caterham Seven 310 Encore is an ode to one very special engine

Introducing the exhilarating Caterham Seven 310 Encore, a special edition born to pay tribute to the remarkable legacy of the Ford Sigma engine—a powertrain that has fueled the lightweight racing marvel for more than a decade. Car enthusiasts will recognize that Caterham has been embracing 1.6-litre four-cylinder Ford engines since 1973, but it was in 2007 that the Ford Sigma motor debuted in mid-range Seven models, taking the reins from the outdated Rover K-series. Fast-forward to recent years: the British manufacturer decided it was time to move on, replacing the Sigma engine with a newer 1.3-litre powerhouse from Horse Technologies—a collaboration between Renault and Geely—specifically for the Caterham Academy Championship race cars.

However, before bidding farewell to its long-standing engine, Caterham ensured the 310 Encore would be a memorable send-off. This limited-edition marvel boasts the most powerful variant of the 1.6-litre motor, maximizing its potential. With a lively output of 152 hp at 7,000 rpm, the Encore may not seem outrageous on paper, yet this little beast catapults the lightweight chassis, weighing a mere 540 kg, from 0 to 100 km/h in a jaw-dropping 4.9 seconds. The power-to-weight ratio is equally compelling, reaching an impressive 281 hp per tonne. All this performance is harnessed through a slick five-speed manual gearbox, which is not just suited for everyday driving but also comes with enhancements inspired by the Sigma-powered 310R Championship racer. Features such as a lightweight flywheel, 254 mm vented front brake discs with quad-piston calipers, a race brake master cylinder, and a 'sports suspension pack' provide a thrilling and connected driving experience. This includes a widened front track, adjustable spring platforms, and an adjustable rear anti-roll bar that keeps the car glued to the tarmac.

Wrapped around 13-inch alloy wheels, the sport-focused TOYO R888R tyres ensure that every turn is taken with confidence. The wheels are accentuated by a unique gunmetal finish that pairs beautifully with the strong, sleek chassis. The exterior gets even more exciting with features drawn from its power-hungry sibling—the Caterham Seven 620. A striking aero nose cone, a 'Cup’ mesh grille, carbon fibre front wings, and a dramatic black finish for components like the headlights, exhaust heat shield cover, and windscreen surround make the 310 Encore a visual feast. Inside the cabin, modern design meets classic inspiration with black leather seats adorned with dark grey stitching and an exclusive Encore logo. A carbon fibre dashboard showcases bespoke Encore edition dials and a shift light, while safety features include a four-point harness and a removable MOMO steering wheel that enhances the sporty atmosphere. To crown this masterpiece, a numbered plaque signifies the exclusivity of the 310 Encore, as only 25 units will ever be produced, each priced from around €46,000.

Potential buyers can select from an exciting assortment of six distinctive body paint schemes and striking stripes, each creatively inspired by iconic pop songs. Choose from titles like Blue Monday, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Green Light, Orange Crush, Back in Black, and White Noise to make your Caterham truly stand out. Bob Laishley, Caterham’s CEO, captured the spirit of this limited edition wonderfully by saying, “For over 50 years, the Caterham Seven has been propelled to success by various incarnations of Ford’s four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. From the straightforward charm of the original 1.6-litre Crossflow to the advanced Sigma, these engines have provided an unmatched blend of exhilarating performance and economical operating costs. The Sigma’s motorsport pedigree speaks volumes, having powered numerous Caterham race series for nearly two decades.” He further elaborated, “Perfectly designed for both road and track, the 310 Encore distils decades of success into a unique vehicle, making it a fitting tribute to the indelible impact of the Ford Sigma on Caterham history.” If you’re after a slice of automotive history combined with thrilling modernity, the Caterham Seven 310 Encore is an excellent choice. Experience it for yourself and feel the legacy come alive!
