Will I Find Parts? The Truth About Maintaining Japanese Imports in Cyprus

For many buyers considering a Japanese import in Cyprus, one concern comes up almost immediately: What happens when the car needs parts or repairs?
It is probably the single biggest objection surrounding JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) imports — especially for people buying a vehicle directly from Japan for the first time. But in reality, maintaining a Japanese import in Cyprus is far less complicated than many buyers expect.

In fact, Cyprus is one of the easiest European markets in which to own and maintain a Japanese vehicle, thanks to the country’s long-standing relationship with right-hand-drive Japanese cars, a strong local mechanic network and easy access to OEM and aftermarket parts.

Japanese Cars Are Already Everywhere in Cyprus
Japanese brands have dominated the Cypriot market for decades. Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda and Suzuki are among the most common vehicles on local roads, both as official European models and imported Japanese-spec cars.

Because Cyprus drives on the left and allows right-hand-drive vehicles, the market naturally became highly compatible with Japanese imports. Many local dealers and import specialists now focus almost entirely on vehicles sourced from Japan.

Import companies operating in Cyprus openly state that JDM imports are “incredibly common” on the island, and that most Japanese models share major mechanical components with their European equivalents.

That means local workshops are not dealing with something exotic or unfamiliar when a Japanese import arrives for servicing.

Local Mechanics Already Know These Cars

One of the biggest misconceptions about JDM ownership is that only specialised garages can repair imported vehicles. In Cyprus, that is largely untrue.

Most independent mechanics already work daily with:

- Toyota hybrids
- Nissan compact cars
- Honda hatchbacks
- Mazda crossovers
- Japanese kei-derived platforms
- Hybrid drivetrains imported from Japan

According to Cyprus-based import specialists, mechanics are already highly experienced with common Japanese brands, particularly Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda.
This is especially true because many Japanese imports use:

- The same engines as EU models
- The same transmissions
- Shared suspension and braking systems
- Identical service consumables

In practical terms, routine maintenance usually looks no different from servicing a locally sold Japanese car.

OEM Parts Are Easier to Source Than Most Buyers Expect

Another fear surrounding JDM ownership is the idea that replacement parts must be specially ordered from Japan at huge expense. In reality, Cyprus already has multiple established channels for sourcing Japanese OEM and aftermarket parts.

These include:

- Local importers specialising in Japanese dismantling stock
- Cyprus-based used-parts suppliers
- EU-wide OEM distribution networks
- Japanese exporters shipping directly to Cyprus
- Large online inventory systems with international shipping

Companies operating directly in Cyprus advertise extensive inventories of used Japanese mechanical and body parts.

Meanwhile, major exporters such as BE FORWARD provide direct international access to millions of used OEM parts from Japan, including engines, transmissions, electronics, body panels and hybrid components. For common models like the Toyota Yaris, Prius, Aqua, Honda Fit or Nissan Note, parts availability is generally considered excellent due to the sheer number of imported vehicles already operating in Cyprus.

Hybrid Batteries Are No Longer a Major Problem

Hybrid battery concerns used to be a major reason buyers avoided imported Japanese hybrids. That has changed significantly over the past decade.

Today:

- Reconditioned hybrid batteries are widely available
- Individual battery cell replacement is common
- Independent hybrid specialists operate across Cyprus
- Toyota hybrid systems are now extremely well understood

Since Toyota hybrids such as the Prius and Aqua are among the most imported Japanese vehicles into Cyprus, repair knowledge and parts supply have matured rapidly.
For many owners, battery maintenance now resembles a manageable long-term maintenance item rather than a catastrophic ownership risk.

What About Rare or High-Performance JDM Models?

The situation becomes slightly more complex with niche imports such as:

- Nissan Skyline GT-R models
- Toyota Crown variants
- Kei cars with unique drivetrains
- Performance-oriented JDM-only engines
- Parts may take longer to source, especially for:
- Interior trim
- Rare electronics
- Model-specific body panels
- Performance components

However, even here, global supply chains have improved dramatically. Japanese exporters now routinely ship parts internationally, and online OEM catalogues make component identification far easier than it was ten years ago. For mainstream Japanese imports, though, sourcing delays are usually minimal.

Why Cyprus Is Actually a Good Market for JDM Ownership

- Compared with many European countries, Cyprus is unusually well suited to Japanese imports because:
- The country accepts right-hand-drive vehicles
- Japanese brands already dominate the local market
- Mechanics are familiar with Japanese platforms
- OEM and used parts channels already exist
- Import infrastructure is mature
- Japanese import communities are well established

Several major exporters specifically highlight Cyprus as a straightforward destination for Japanese imports, with regular RoRo shipping routes through Limassol and Larnaca.

The Reality

For most buyers, maintaining a Japanese import in Cyprus is no longer the risky or complicated process it may once have been. If anything, the market has evolved in the opposite direction: Japanese imports are now so common that servicing networks, parts suppliers and mechanic familiarity have largely adapted around them. For mainstream Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda imports, finding parts in Cyprus is typically far easier than many first-time buyers expect.
