For drivers based in Cyprus, the context below is worth keeping in mind before the next purchase.
For many buyers considering Japanese imports in Cyprus, one question arises almost immediately: what to do about repairs and spare parts?
Perhaps this is the main fear surrounding JDM cars — especially for those buying a car directly from Japan for the first time. But in practice, servicing Japanese imports in Cyprus today is significantly easier than most buyers expect. Moreover, Cyprus is one of the most convenient markets in Europe for owning a Japanese car. This is all thanks to a long-standing culture of right-hand drive vehicles, a developed network of local mechanics, and easy access to both OEM and aftermarket parts.
Japanese Cars Are Everywhere in Cyprus
Japanese brands have dominated the Cypriot market for decades. Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Suzuki are among the most common cars on local roads, both in official European versions and in Japanese specifications. Since Cyprus has left-hand traffic and right-hand drive cars are permitted, the market has naturally become perfectly compatible with Japanese imports. Many local dealers and import companies today almost exclusively specialize in cars from Japan.
Companies operating in Cyprus openly refer to JDM imports as an "incredibly common" phenomenon on the island and note that most Japanese models use the same key mechanical components as their European counterparts. This means that for local services, Japanese imports are no longer something exotic. Local mechanics are already well acquainted with these cars.
One of the most popular myths about JDM is that only specialized services can repair such vehicles. In Cyprus, this is largely no longer the case.
Most independent mechanics work daily with: hybrid Toyotas, compact Nissans, Honda hatchbacks, Mazda crossovers, kei car platforms, hybrid systems from Japan.
According to Cypriot importers, mechanics are well familiar with Japanese brands — especially Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mazda. And this is not surprising, as many imported models use: the same engines as the European versions, the same transmissions, common suspension and braking system components, identical consumables for maintenance.
In practice, routine maintenance often differs little from servicing a locally sold Japanese car. Finding OEM parts is easier than many think.
Another fear surrounding JDM is the notion that any part will have to be ordered from Japan at great expense. In reality, Cyprus has long had several stable channels for supplying original and non-original parts. Among them are: local importers of Japanese dismantlers, Cypriot suppliers of used parts, pan-European OEM networks, Japanese exporters with direct delivery to Cyprus, and large online platforms of international warehouses.
Companies operating directly in Cyprus offer large warehouses of Japanese body and mechanical parts. Major exporters like BE FORWARD provide access to millions of original parts from Japan — from engines and transmissions to electronics and hybrid components. For popular models like the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Prius, Toyota Aqua, Honda Fit, or Nissan Note, the availability of parts is usually considered excellent — simply due to the vast number of such cars on the island.
Hybrid Batteries Are No Longer a Serious Problem
Once, batteries were the main argument against Japanese hybrids. Over the past ten years, the situation has changed significantly.
Today, refurbished hybrid batteries are widely available; replacing individual cells has become common practice; independent hybrid specialists operate in Cyprus; Toyota Hybrid systems have long been well studied.
Since the Prius and Aqua are among the most popular imported cars in Cyprus, the market for servicing and supplying components for them has fully formed. For most owners, servicing the battery today is perceived more as a regular long-term service issue rather than a catastrophic risk of ownership.
What About Rare JDM Models?
The situation becomes a bit more complicated when it comes to niche cars like: Nissan Skyline GT-R, Toyota Crown, kei cars with unique powertrains, rare JDM-only engines. For such models, it may take longer to search for: interior trim elements, rare electronics, unique body panels, performance components.
But even here, global supplies have greatly simplified in recent years. Japanese exporters regularly ship parts worldwide, and online OEM catalogs make finding the necessary components much easier than just ten years ago. For mass-market Japanese models, serious delays with parts today are more of an exception.
Why is Cyprus a Good Market for JDM?
Compared to many countries in Europe, Cyprus is particularly well-suited for Japanese imports because:
- right-hand drive cars are permitted here
- Japanese brands already dominate the market
- mechanics are well acquainted with Japanese platforms
- the infrastructure for supplying parts has long existed
- import logistics are well developed
- a large JDM community has formed
Major exporters specifically mention Cyprus as one of the easiest destinations for Japanese imports due to regular RoRo routes through Limassol and Larnaca.
Reality
For most buyers, servicing Japanese imports in Cyprus has long ceased to be a complicated or risky process. Quite the opposite: the market has adapted so well to JDM cars that services, parts suppliers, and the mechanics themselves have already built an infrastructure around them. And when it comes to popular Toyota, Nissan, Honda, or Mazda models, finding spare parts in Cyprus is usually much easier than buyers encountering Japanese imports for the first time expect.
