Audi has announced that the updated plug-in hybrid version of the A3 hatchback will now offer an impressive all-electric range of 140 km, more than double that of its predecessor. This extended range is made possible by a new 25.7kWh battery (19.7kWh usable) replacing the previous 13kWh unit, along with a new 50kW DC rapid charging capability that can charge the battery from 10 to 80% in under half an hour. The hybrid system in the A3 combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an integrated electric motor, delivering a total output of 201bhp and 350Nm of torque. The electric motor alone provides 114bhp, allowing for a top speed of 140 km/h in EV mode and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.4 seconds. Additionally, the A3 40 TFSI e includes regenerative braking for energy recuperation and coasting with the engine off when the accelerator is released. The plug-in hybrid model also features specially tuned suspension to accommodate the extra weight of the battery located under the rear seats.Set to be released in November, the A3 40 TFSI e will be offered in three trim levels with standard features like Audi's 'Virtual Cockpit Plus' display, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, three-zone climate control, and 17-inch alloy wheels. If you're considering an electric vehicle, the A3 40 TFSI e is definitely one to watch.
