New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe debuts with updated design & hybrid tech
18.10.2024
The recently updated BMW 1 Series was followed by the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe earlier this year. Although it remains on the same platform as its predecessor, the new model brings significant design enhancements, improved interior technology, and a mild-hybrid powertrain. BMW considers it a completely new generation, replacing the F44 model with the F74 generation 2 Series Gran Coupe. This model will compete with premium sedan alternatives such as the Audi A3 Saloon and Mercedes CLA.The starting prices for the 2 Series Gran Coupe range from €39,000 for the 220 M Sport model to €49,500 for the M235 xDrive model. Compared to its predecessor, the prices show a slight increase for the 220 M Sport model and a reduction for the M235 xDrive model. Sales in Europe are set to begin in early 2025. The 2 Series Gran Coupe boasts a distinctive design, featuring a wider grille, thinner headlights, and a broad air intake that gives it a sleek and aggressive appearance. The side profile of the 2 Series Gran Coupe has been updated with a revised 'Hofmeister kink' on the rear pillar, reprofiled side skirts, and new lights at the rear inspired by the latest X2 and 1 Series. The cabin offers two solid paint options and seven metallic choices, with the option to add a contrasting gloss black roof. The M Sport package is standard, including 18-inch wheels, gloss black accents, an M Sport body kit, and a rear spoiler.Inside, the cabin closely resembles the new 1 Series, with a 10.7-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and a redesigned steering wheel with integrated physical buttons. The rotary iDrive controller has been replaced with a touchscreen-based OS9 infotainment system. The trunk offers 430 liters of space, 130 liters more than the mild-hybrid 1 Series.Powering the 2 Series Gran Coupe is BMW's 1.5-liter, three-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine, delivering 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque in the 220 model. The M235 model features a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque, reaching 0–100 km/h in about five seconds. The M235 model also includes BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, mechanical differential lock for the front wheels, upgraded front brakes from the M3 and M4, and additional features like a head-up display, Alcantara M Sport seats, and a quad exhaust system.
