New Mercedes VLE edges closer as blocky electric people carrier is teased again

27/07/2025

Get ready to buckle up for the future, because Mercedes is sprinting ahead with the revolutionary VLE, set to roll into our lives in 2026! This remarkable vehicle will be the inaugural model built on the ingenious VAN.EA platform, a groundbreaking step for the German carmaker. Currently, the VLE is in the final stages of development, and fresh images have just emerged showcasing it cruising through a wind tunnel. Mercedes bravely boasts that the aerodynamics are “outstanding in terms of efficiency,” setting the stage for an innovative electric people-carrier. To further tease our excitement, there are stunning shots of the VLE undergoing rigorous testing at the iconic Nardo test track in Italy, where it's fine-tuning its high-speed dynamics and pioneering rear-axle steering capabilities.

The VLE isn’t just another addition to the line-up; it’s poised to be the mid-size marvel reminiscent of the E-Class, comfortably accommodating up to eight occupants. Following closely behind will be the larger VLS, dubbed a ‘grand limousine’ that promises to carve out its own unique niche in the realm of automotive luxury. Mercedes has thrown down the gauntlet, claiming that the VLS will bring “true greatness” to the luxury segment. Recently unveiled results from long-distance tests back up these lofty promises; the test vehicle embarked on a journey from Stuttgart, Germany, to Rome, Italy, spanning a breathtaking 1,100 kilometers. Remarkably, it achieved this with just two quick charging stops of 15 minutes each, hinting at a promising range of approximately 400 to 480 kilometers—an impressive leap from the current EQV’s 364 kilometers.

While the exact battery capacity for the VLE remains under wraps, we know the existing EQV boasts a maximum battery size of 90 kWh, with the potential to max out at 116 kWh in other models, including the stellar EQS and G-Class. Not quite ready to embrace the electric revolution? Well, there are still treasures to uncover in the Mercedes V-Class market, where superb deals await. The VAN.EA platform promises a unique construction tailored for electric performance, with Mercedes boldly claiming it will “usher in a completely new era” for the automotive world. This state-of-the-art technology incorporates advancements seen in luxury electric vehicles, featuring an impressive 800V electrical architecture allowing for blisteringly fast 320 kW charging. Expect high-end chassis and suspension systems that redefine excellence!

The new platform will come with options galore: choose from a single-motor layout or a thrilling dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. Early test models have showcased a rear-wheel-drive configuration with a single motor, enhanced by cutting-edge rear-axle steering, which ensures “easy and agile handling even in tight corners.” Picture zipping through the narrow streets of Rome with the same level of manoeuvrability as the EQS SUV, which can angle its rear wheels by up to 10 degrees. With these dual drivetrains available, the VLE is engineered to adapt seamlessly to a variety of applications and driver needs.

Mercedes has also hinted at the VAN.EA technology, providing ‘clear differentiation’ in design between luxury vans and commercial models. The VAN.EA-P platform, aimed at premium family vans, will cater to everything from luxurious VIP shuttles to spacious limousines. Meanwhile, commercial vans will utilize the VAN.EA-C setup. The design of the VLE draws inspiration from the stunning Vision V Concept unveiled earlier this April. Anticipate a fresh take on Mercedes’ iconic Panamericana grille (even though it’s blanked for aerodynamic supremacy), alongside a striking headlight signature, sleek body contours, and captivating wraparound rear lights.

As for the all-electric line-up on this groundbreaking architecture, you can count on the deployment of the cutting-edge MB.OS infotainment system. Premium models will be “always on,” meaning they’ll have continuous internet connectivity, ready to receive updates. Expect Level 2 automated driving capabilities, with an exciting promise of Level 3 automation by the decade’s end. While we’ve only glimpsed a few prototypes sporting this advanced setup, Mercedes is primed to offer specialized vehicles tailored for diverse uses, whether as a family-friendly option in Europe or a high-end business transport solution in Japan. Though pricing details are still forthcoming, initial estimates suggest a figure around €115,000, especially considering that the existing EQV starts from €107,000.
