New Porsche 963 RSP is a sensational one-off racer for the road

When it comes to merging cutting-edge technology from the racetrack into everyday vehicles, few brands can match what Porsche is doing. The sports car giant has taken an audacious leap by creating a truly unique road-legal version of the illustrious Porsche 963 hypercar, engineered to conquer this year’s celebrated 24 Hours of Le Mans. But hold onto your seats, because only a single Porsche 963 RSP has rolled off the production line! This spectacular machine draws inspiration from a legendary one-off road-legal version of the iconic two-time Le Mans-winning Porsche 917, crafted half a century ago.

The story behind that earlier marvel is just as captivating. It all began at the behest of Italian Martini heir, ‘Count’ Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, a devoted aficionado of the brand. Rossi managed, against all odds, to secure a license plate for his modified Porsche 917—of all places, in Alabama! To transform the race car into something roadworthy, Porsche added a series of clever modifications: exhaust silencers, extra mirrors, side indicators for safety, a horn for good measure, and yes, even a spare tire. Yet, in the case of the 963, the modifications are remarkably more extensive and breathtaking. Instead of the race-ready wrap, this stunning hypercar boasts an ultra-sleek carbon fiber and Kevlar body, painted in the striking Martini Silver—a color authentically verified by the Porsche Museum in Germany using archival records.

Glistening at the front is a majestic enamel Porsche badge, replacing the usual sticker, while the design features New vents on the front wings to enhance both aerodynamics and style. Adding to the exclusivity, a unique 3D printed badge makes a statement on the rear light bar, showcasing Porsche’s commitment to innovation. Meanwhile, the forged OZ racing wheels are adorned with 18-inch Michelin tires, elegantly displaying a vintage logo that pays homage to the style of the 917, capturing the essence of automotive history.

Step inside, and you’ll find yourself enveloped in luxury, thanks to a bespoke interior that melds hand-crafted tan leather with plush Alcantara upholstery. While Apple CarPlay may be absent, Porsche has thoughtfully designed a detachable cup-holder tailored for one of its signature travel mugs. The race-inspired carbon seats are outfitted with air conditioning, echoing the performance characteristics of the 963 race car while providing ultimate driver comfort.

Under the hood lies a race-honed hybrid powertrain that churns out an astonishing 497 kW (671 hp) and features a robust 4.6-liter V8 engine, plucked directly from the Porsche 918 Spyder supercar. With the added boost of two turbochargers, this beast not only revs to over 8,000 rpm but is also recalibrated for smoother power delivery on regular petrol, making it more approachable for everyday driving.

This singular 963 RSP was commissioned by none other than the legendary American racing team owner, Roger Penske, whose initials conveniently lend the car its name. Yet, it wasn't just a matter of simply checking his bank account; the Porsche Penske Motorsport team had an astounding year in motorsport, clinching victories in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the World Endurance Championship with the 963. With plans to field three racing cars at Le Mans, the anticipation surrounding this spectacular vehicle has reached fever pitch.

The Porsche 963 RSP is set to make a grand public debut at the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe during the celebrated 24 Hours of Le Mans, creating a buzz that will reverberate far beyond the racetrack. Following this momentous occasion, it will return to Stuttgart, where it will be showcased at the illustrious Porsche Museum, allowing fans a closer look at this extraordinary machine. And in July, car enthusiasts in the UK will have the rare opportunity to see the car in action at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed, alongside the legendary 917. The thrill of witnessing this engineering marvel in two great contexts is not to be missed!
