10.09.2024
The Volvo ES90, a brand-new pure-electric saloon, is set to make its debut in 2025, entering the competition with BMW i5 and Audi A6 e-tron. The name ES90 was confirmed during the unveiling of the updated Volvo XC90, following the naming convention of the electric SUVs EX90 and EX30. This model will be the eco-friendly replacement for the S90 saloon.Based on the teaser image, the ES90 showcases a sleek design with a sharply raked windscreen and a sloping, fastback-style roofline. Its length appears to be considerable, similar to the outgoing S90 which measured nearly five meters. The presence of a small sensor at the top of the windscreen suggests that the ES90 will be equipped with LiDAR technology, similar to the EX90 SUV.Although specific technical details are yet to be revealed, it is expected that the ES90 will utilize Volvo's SPA2 platform used in the EX90. If it incorporates similar battery and motor options, the ES90 could potentially feature a 107kWh battery, providing a range of over 640 kilometers on a single charge in its streamlined saloon body. The ES90 is part of Volvo's plan to develop five new electric models. The company adjusted its target to have between 90 to 100 percent of global sales as electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles by the end of the decade, with mild hybrids making up the remaining portion. Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan emphasized the brand's commitment to electrification, stating, ‟We are firm in our belief that our future is electric,‟ acknowledging that the transition will vary by market. This necessitates a flexible and practical approach, while Volvo continues to lead in sustainability and electrification.
