The first Corvette left the Flint plant in June 1953 — a white roadster with a straight-six and a two-speed automatic. For seventy years every one that followed put the engine in front and the steering wheel on the left. The C8 broke both habits at once. It is the first mid-engine Corvette and the first built in right-hand drive on the production line, which is why a Corvette in Cyprus is finally something you own rather than tolerate. This 2023 example wears the 70th Anniversary badging every vehicle of that model year carries. It went to Japan new, came through auction at grade 4.5 with no rust and no accident history. Red Mist Metallic Tintcoat is a deep cherry with a clear tint layer over the metallic base — claret in shade, close to arterial in full sun. On a mid-engine shape with air intakes cut into the doors it does what a Corvette colour is supposed to do. The roof panel lifts out in under a minute and stows behind the engine — an open targa for the coast road, a coupe again before the car park.

Behind the seats sits the 6.2-litre LT2 V8, naturally aspirated in an era when almost nothing else is. 490 hp and 637 Nm through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox to the rear wheels only. 100 km/h arrives in about three seconds; top speed with the Z51 aero is 296 km/h. The response matters more: no turbo lag, no hybrid interference, a V8 an octave lower than anything else on a Cyprus motorway. Driven gently it runs on four cylinders and returns 12.1 litres per 100 km combined, dropping to around 8 on a long motorway stretch.

The Z51 Performance Package turns a fast Stingray into a serious one. Magnetic Ride Control reads the road a thousand times a second and adjusts the dampers to suit — the difference between a supercar that punishes Cypriot tarmac and one that absorbs it. An electronic limited-slip differential puts the power down out of a hairpin instead of spinning it away. Brembo brakes handle the descent from Troodos without fading. Extra cooling, performance exhaust, front splitter and rear spoiler complete it. On top of it, this example has the front lift: one button raises the nose over the steep driveways and unmarked speed bumps the island has more of than it admits.

The 2LT interior pairs black with Natural leather, the shade of aged cognac, on seats that heat, ventilate and remember their settings. The squared two-spoke wheel is heated. A head-up display keeps speed and revs in the windscreen. Bose premium audio for the idling moments. The rear camera mirror replaces the view over the engine cover, which in a mid-engine coupe is a necessity rather than a luxury. Two boots: 105 litres under the front lid for soft bags, 252 litres behind the engine for the roof panel or two flight cases — 357 litres in total, more than some hatchbacks. CO2 emissions of 277 g/km put the annual road tax at €1,270, the honest price of a 6.2-litre V8.
