Despite various government incentives aimed at promoting electric vehicles, they still constitute a small percentage of the cars on Cyprus’s roads. While the number of electric cars has been steadily increasing each year, traditional fuel vehicles remain the dominant choice for most drivers. In contrast, hybrids are making more rapid gains, indicating that many Cypriots are opting for a cautious, gradual shift toward full electrification.
From 2019 to 2024, the registration figures for electric and hybrid cars have shown consistent growth, although they still represent a minority of the market:
2019 — 37,802 passenger cars registered; 54 electric, 1,884 hybrid
2020 — 30,828 registered; 78 electric, 2,338 hybrid
2021 — 26,634 registered; 120 electric, 4,513 hybrid
2022 — 26,598 registered; 512 electric, 6,103 hybrid
2023 — 36,608 registered; 995 electric, 10,819 hybrid
2024 — 1,529 electric, 14,246 hybrid on the road
This data clearly indicates a positive but modest trend. Despite the incentives and increased availability of electric vehicles, the majority of Cypriot drivers still lean towards conventional cars, suggesting that electric mobility has not yet become mainstream.
