Hardcore Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Pinpointing the ultimate version of the Porsche 911 is no small task, but all signs point to the GT2 RS as a strong contender. This limited-production model, known for its jaw-dropping price tag, has historically served as the flag bearer for a 911 generation. It masterfully combines the fierce chassis derived from the GT3 RS with an even more potent turbocharged powertrain borrowed from the Turbo. For the latest 992 generation, Porsche appears to be raising the ante in spectacular fashion—especially given the wild prototypes spotted tearing up the Nürburgring.

First off, it seems the body of this car is wider than that of the already robust GT3 RS. The prototype boasts cladding draped over its rear haunches, cleverly camouflaging a fresh set of wheels that Porsche enthusiasts have never seen before during testing phases. The front fares no differently, showcasing dramatically widened arches complete with the iconic venting and ducting features taken from the GT3 RS yet amplified in scale. The lightweight carbon-fibre bonnet, replete with vast openings designed to optimize radiator airflow, has also been included, along with a stylish carbon roof featuring longitudinal vanes. These channels direct air toward the motorsport-sized rear wing, equipped with an advanced Drag Reduction System (DRS) for added aerodynamic efficiency. As we turn our gaze to the rear, however, the transformation from the naturally-aspirated GT3 RS becomes apparent: sleek new rear lights and a modified lower bumper suggest a different exhaust system is lurking underneath.

Gone are the twin central exhaust pipes of the GT3 RS; instead, you’ll find an innovative setup featuring makeshift exhaust tips integrated into the inner section of the rear bumper. Although these tips won’t resemble those found on the eventual production model, their strategic positioning indicates that a complete overhaul of the rear is on the horizon to accommodate the new Turbo’s exhaust system. While detailed specifications remain scant, excitement builds as we await the unveiling of the new 992.2 Turbo later this year—an event that may also shed light on the groundbreaking powertrain that the GT2 RS could feature. There’s speculation that Porsche may introduce a hybrid system akin to that employed in the GTS, which integrates a small electric motor within the dual-clutch transmission and another nestled inside a singular, large turbocharger. The precise manner in which the upcoming Turbo will manage this technology is still under wraps but will undoubtedly have a significant impact on what we can expect from the GT2 RS.

On the power front, Porsche seems poised to push boundaries, potentially exceeding the stunning 690 hp delivered by the previous GT2 RS that took the stage in 2017. With the next iteration of the 911 Turbo S aiming for figures in that realm, it’s not far-fetched to predict that the 992.2 GT2 RS could breach the 700 hp mark and flirt dangerously close to the staggering 800 hp threshold. This ambition becomes particularly pertinent as Porsche pushes to achieve ultimate performance before stringent European emissions regulations bring such figures to a standstill.

The power is almost certain to be channeled exclusively to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission; a manual variant seems unlikely given the immense power and torque expected. Furthermore, kitchen sink-level aerodynamic and chassis upgrades are likely part of the equation. Expect Porsche to implement carbon fibre extensively throughout the body panels and car interior. In a world where supercars are increasingly influenced by the cutting-edge features seen in high-end models from manufacturers like Ferrari and McLaren—such as spool valve and hydraulically cross-linked dampers—it wouldn’t be a shock to see Porsche using its flagship 911 as a proving ground for ideas that will shape the future of supercars.
