BMW is preparing a revolution with the i7: faster charging, greater range, new design

In the lead-up to the official premiere at the Beijing Motor Show, which will take place in just a few weeks, more details are emerging about the BMW i7 and the extensive updates it will receive. BMW has confirmed that the flagship will feature a completely new battery technology developed in collaboration with Rimac, placing the model at the forefront of the large electric sedan segment in both Europe and China.

Like the new models from the Neue Klasse family — the i3 and iX3 — the updated i7 will be equipped with advanced sixth-generation cylindrical batteries. These are expected to increase energy capacity by approximately 20% compared to the current version and allow for a range of about 800 km — a figure that is gradually becoming the standard for premium electric sedans.

Currently, the i7 uses a 102 kWh battery, providing a range of 560 to 610 km depending on the version. In the next generation, capacity is expected to increase to at least 112 kWh — on par with the new i3.

The development of the batteries was handled by Rimac Technologies — a division of Rimac Group, closely associated with Bugatti. Production will be established in Croatia, after which the batteries will be sent to BMW's factory in Germany for final assembly.

A serious upgrade is also expected for charging. Thanks to Neue Klasse technologies, the i7 will likely support charging power of up to 400 kW — on par with the most modern and fastest electric vehicles. Updates will also affect the plug-in hybrid versions of the 7 Series: a new technology aimed at improving efficiency and handling is expected.

But the changes will not be limited to technology. Judging by recent spy shots, the i7 will feature a redesigned front end with sharper lines and new graphics. The grille will become more "split" and will receive full LED lighting.
The signature two-level optics will remain, but the upper light elements will become thinner and wider, while the main headlight units will be more neatly integrated into the side air intakes. BMW is expected to offer two visual directions: a more restrained base version and a sporty M Sport variant with a more aggressive appearance.

At the rear — new taillights and a redesigned bumper. The personalization program will also expand: more options for body colors, wheel designs, and interior materials. There will likely also be a version from Alpina in the lineup.

Inside, the 7 Series will transition to a new generation of BMW technologies, effectively updating the electronic architecture for both electric and gasoline versions. This includes the new generation Panoramic iDrive system, updated touch interfaces, and an even more premium atmosphere in the cabin.
All details will be revealed at the end of April — during the official premiere of the BMW i7 at the Beijing Motor Show.
