A white coupe with black details. Until a door opens: scarlet semi-aniline Nappa, the pairing Mercedes has kept since the Gullwing. 429 hp with electric boost. Commissioned from Japan — the next one can be yours.
Commissioned
White over red has been in the Mercedes book since the 300 SL Gullwing — pale bodywork, scarlet hide, doors that made history. The pairing never left the configurator; it just became the one almost nobody is brave enough to tick. Seventy years on, this GLE 53 Coupe wears it the way the factory always intended: Polar White paintwork over scarlet red semi-aniline Nappa. We sourced the vehicle in Japan on a client's commission, shipped it, cleared it and handed it over in Cyprus. It is not for sale.
The red is not an accent package. Semi-aniline Nappa covers the seats in full, set against black ARTICO across the upper dashboard, grey open-grained oak through the trim and a black headliner overhead. Semi-aniline is the point: the hide keeps its natural surface instead of disappearing under thick pigment, so it feels like leather now and ages like leather later. Multicontour front seats bring massage, ventilation and comfort headrests. Heating covers the rear bench as well as the front. Even the cupholders hold temperature, which in a Cyprus summer means a cold bottle of water at arm's reach.
The exterior plays the counterweight. The AMG Night package pulls every bright detail to gloss black against the white — 22-inch AMG double-spoke wheels on mixed-width tyres, the AMG rear aerofoil on the coupe roofline, dark tinted glass behind the B-pillar. White body, black details, red heart. The shape reads as one deliberate object rather than an SUV with trim added.
Under the bonnet works the engine that ended the six-versus-eight argument for this class. A 3.0-litre inline-six with an electric auxiliary compressor and a 48-volt starter-generator produces 429 hp and 560 Nm, the electric side filling in before the turbocharger arrives — response first, numbers second. 100 km/h passes in about 5.0 seconds through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT nine-speed and fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. Asked, it moves like an AMG. Left alone, it idles like a limousine. That double life is the entire brief of a vehicle this size.
The equipment list reads like someone went through the catalogue twice. A head-up display keeps speed and navigation in the windscreen. Burmester surround sound fills a cabin the coupe roof makes more intimate than the footprint suggests. The Driving Assistance package brings adaptive cruise with steering support, cross-traffic assistance and traffic sign recognition. A 360-degree camera and Active Park Assist manage the geometry. Keyless-Go, a powered tailgate, wireless charging, gesture control, illuminated sills, mirrors that project the star onto the tarmac at night and an air quality package that filters and ionises the cabin. The panoramic sunroof slides properly open rather than merely letting light through.
Japan kept the vehicle the way Japan keeps things. An auction inspector documented its condition panel by panel before we ever placed a bid. On an engine of this construction, 17,000 km is barely a finished running-in.
The coupe roofline is a choice — usually a costly one. Here the price is small: the rear bench takes adults without negotiation, the boot accomodates a family's luggage and the silhouette does what it was ordered to do — turns a two-tonne SUV into something people turn around for.
This vehicle was commissioned end to end: sourcing against the brief, auction verification, purchase, shipping, customs clearance, number plate purchase and Cyprus registration. Delivered to its owner. Not for sale. The combination has been in the book since the Gullwing — describe your specification and will find it in Japan, U.K. or Australia.
