Alpine’s big plan for a super-SUV to rival the Porsche Cayenne

Alpine is preparing for an electrifying transformation, revving up its electric vehicle (EV) line up with thrilling new models that are set to capture the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere. Hot off the heels of the exhilarating A290 hot hatch and the impressive new A390 SUV, Alpine is gearing up to unveil a total of five groundbreaking models, propelling its EV collection to a remarkable seven vehicles by 2030, including a high-performance flagship SUV. During an engaging discussion at the celebrated Goodwood Festival of Speed, Antony Villain, the visionary head of design for Alpine, teased the potential arrival of a new premium SUV, noting the brand's commitment to the D and E segments. This exciting revelation hints at a flagship SUV that will overshadow the recently showcased A390.

Adding to the excitement, we already know that the A290, rooted in the iconic Renault 5 lineage, will soon be joined by an all-electric version of the revered A110, with a convertible variant set to roll out by 2027. Additionally, prepare for the adrenaline rush that comes with the A310, a four-seat electric sports car poised to electrify the roads. And as we glance toward the horizon, we anticipate the arrival of a large SUV, likely to carry the A590 name—fittingly aligning with Alpine’s ‘90’ branding for its non-sportscar offerings. This A590 would penetrate the increasingly competitive D or E-segment SUV market, setting its sights on rivals like the BMW iX, Lotus Eletre, and the upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV. While we might have to wait a while for official previews and teasers, Alpine is steadfast in its commitment to a cohesive design language across its electric lineup. Expect striking features such as quad headlights positioned in a distinct ‘V’ shape, a gracefully curved rear window, and a sleek, rounded side profile that speaks of both elegance and performance.

As Alpine gears up to turn heads with the looks and performance of its upcoming offerings, the brand also places great emphasis on driver ergonomics. The classic Alpine A110, with its launch dating back to 2017, retains a collection of tactile buttons for essential climate controls and frequently accessed features. However, as the A290 hot hatch and the A390 SUV come into play, they embrace a more modern approach with larger infotainment screens. Villain emphasizes that Alpine drivers prioritize the pure joy of driving, stating, “You don’t want screens everywhere.” He articulated the brand's dedication to preserving a level of tactile engagement, asserting that physical buttons will remain a prevalent feature in Alpine vehicles. After all, driving engagement—including in larger SUVs—continues to be a key aspect of the Alpine ethos.

The A390 SUV, which rides on the Renault Group's AmpR Medium platform, is engineered to accommodate a variety of configurations, including options for up to seven seats. With an impressive powertrain featuring three electric motors—one located at the front and two at the rear—the A390 boasts a robust total output of 463 hp. This power, enhanced by active torque vectoring, ensures a driving experience that prioritizes agility and pleasure behind the wheel. As we look ahead, we expect to see similar technological advancements embedded in Alpine's future electric models, including the much-anticipated A590.
