Even though the current eighth-generation BMW 5 Series burst onto the scene just under two years ago, we've already spied the facelifted version undergoing rigorous testing. This time, we caught it manoeuvring not only in the high-performance M5 trim but also in its standard configuration. Excitingly, it’s clear that this executive favourite is gearing up for a substantial makeover as part of its mid-cycle refresh, set to keep it vibrant and dynamic in the face of the eagerly awaited 'Neue Klasse' models. BMW is making bold moves with its design language, ushering in a radical departure that will extend not just to its electric lineup, but also to models powered by internal combustion engines. This evolution is unmistakably illustrated in the revamped M5, which, although launched less than two years ago, is in line for a striking aesthetic overhaul in order to maintain a cohesive look across its iconic lineup. We can expect this refreshed super saloon to make its grand entrance in 2027. But it's not solely the M5 that’s in for changes; we’ve also spotted the standard 5 Series flaunting a new appearance.
Since the G60-generation 5 Series (G90 representing the M5) hit the market, BMW has been teasing its upcoming Neue Klasse production series. This exciting new series is set to kick off later this year at the illustrious Munich Motor Show with the iX3, an electric variant grounded in the Vision Neue Klasse X concept. Following that debut, 2026 will see the launch of the Neue Klasse Sedan, which will also herald the arrival of the first-ever all-electric 3 Series. Both vehicles will utilize BMW's cutting-edge Neue Klasse platform, marking a significant evolution from the current 5 Series and M5, which rely on the established CLAR modular architecture. Thankfully, the fresh styling is expected to be integrated into existing models too, as the competition in the executive segment has stepped up recently. With Audi’s all-new and all-electric A6 e-tron, a traditional internal-combustion A6 variant, and even Volvo’s sleek new all-electric ES90 entering the fray, the stakes have never been higher.
While we have already caught sight of the facelifted M5 championing snowy terrains, this latest glimpse features it undergoing a rigorous testing session at the iconic Nurburgring—an indicator that we are getting closer to the grand reveal. Despite its heavy camouflage, the latest design elements are becoming increasingly observable, especially the Neue Klasse's interpretation of BMW’s legendary kidney grilles, now skinnier and sharper than before. These grills will host a revamped headlight design, bringing a fresh edge to that familiar front fascia. The facelifted car will also retain the blanked-off grille pioneered by its predecessors, ensuring exceptional aerodynamic performance. Below, new air intakes will emerge through a redesigned front bumper that enhances its aggressive stance. Peeking at the M5’s wheel design, we notice they come clad in summer tyres— a nod to the car's performance pedigree—while the larger brake calipers signal its readiness for spirited driving. Along the side, the signature Hofmeister kink continues to shine proudly. At the rear, the M5 prototype sports a bespoke bumper and diffuser arrangement, complete with a subtle lip spoiler, while those iconic quad exhaust tips maintain the vibrant essence of a true BMW M car.
As BMW dives deep into the future with its internal layouts, we can look forward to seeing what the inside of the new models will resemble, particularly with the introduction of 'Panoramic iDrive.' This innovative dashboard configuration will eliminate the traditional rotary iDrive controller in favour of an expansive, full-width ‘Panoramic Vision’ display seamlessly incorporated into the dash, featuring a stunning 17.9-inch central touchscreen for an immersive driving experience.
The new 5 Series is expected to adopt elements of this modernized design, promising a cabin that leans towards minimalism without sacrificing sophistication. Under the hood, the M5 boasts a phenomenal 717 hp alongside a staggering 1,000 Nm of torque, thanks to its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 paired with a plug-in hybrid system, distributing power to all four wheels. As for powertrains across the M5, 5 Series, and i5, it seems likely that no major updates will be on the horizon as part of this facelift.
