Porsche plans new Classic SUV amid Macan EV transition

Exciting developments are on the horizon at Porsche as the iconic manufacturer embarks on a thrilling journey into the world of SUVs. With its commitment to combustion and hybrid engines, the brand looks to fill a unique niche as its electric-only Macan aspirations face delays. Last year, Porsche took a significant step forward by introducing the Macan Electric, successfully delivering 18,274 zero-emissions SUVs in the latter part of the year. Yet, certain markets, including the UK, will continue to see sales of the well-loved petrol and hybrid versions for a couple more years before transitioning entirely to an electric SUV lineup. This leaves a noticeable gap in Porsche's vibrant family of vehicles—a gap that Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has promised to address. «We will be developing a brand-new SUV, a classic Porsche SUV,» he declared. «The initial sketches and concepts are being created, and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive!»

Blume emphasized that this new endeavour may come with its costs, but it promises to bring future flexibility to the brand. While this upcoming SUV will not bear the Macan name, it is touted to be an "independent model line" distinguished by a «fresh design» that embodies Porsche's sporty DNA. To maximize efficiency—a crucial element in the automotive industry—this innovative SUV will leverage the architectures of the Volkswagen Group. "We can craft a true Porsche by utilizing synergies from our existing models," Blume noted, who also serves as the CEO of Volkswagen Group. This approach not only bolsters the development process but also ensures that the new model remains quintessentially Porsche in both performance and design.

The current generation of the Macan shares its underlying architecture with the Audi Q5, relying on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) framework. Fans of Porsche can expect the forthcoming SUV to tap into a modernized version of this platform, which promises to elevate performance standards and enhance driving experiences. However, the exact timeline for the launch remains shrouded in mystery, as Porsche has only hinted that this much-anticipated four-wheel-drive SUV will make its debut before the end of the decade. This timeline does raise concerns, as it suggests a period where Porsche’s lineup will be devoid of a combustion or hybrid mid-sized SUV. Therefore, the stakes are high, and the company is making every effort to minimize any potential downtime.

The combustion version of the Macan has already been taken off the shelves in mainland Europe—unable to comply with new cybersecurity regulations. This unexpected turn of events, paired with a slower than anticipated uptake of electric vehicles, has prompted Porsche to pivot strategically. Blume referred to this adjustment as a protective measure, adding, «Different regions are progressing at varying rates in this electric transformation. We must adapt our approach based on specific markets.»

This new SUV is perfectly poised to cater to North America, the largest market for the Macan, along with other regions where the transition to electric vehicles is taking a bit more time. Porsche is intent on recalibrating its strategy, as evidenced by the upcoming models of the Cayenne, set to hit the market shortly. «We will soon introduce an internal combustion engine version, a plug-in hybrid, and a fully electric variant of the Cayenne,» Blume announced with enthusiasm. The arrival of these variations is just around the corner, showcasing Porsche's commitment to providing an inclusive range of luxury SUVs.

Porsche enthusiasts across Europe and beyond can easily access an impressive inventory of high-value new cars through their extensive dealer network, ensuring that the thrill of driving a new Porsche remains just within reach.
