2026 Mercedes C-Class to be offered EV only

The highly anticipated all-electric Mercedes C-Class, scheduled for release in 2026, is ready to enter the competitive compact executive car market. Corporate vehicles have always played a significant role for luxury car brands, and this trend is projected to continue as several major automakers gear up to unveil electric vehicle replacements in the next couple of years. Our exclusive preview image gives a glimpse of the upcoming C-Class, which will retain Mercedes' iconic design features while incorporating elements from the innovative EQ models and traditional combustion-engine vehicles. The vehicle will be built on a modified version of the current EQE's EVA2 platform, instead of a completely new electric architecture. This strategic choice enables Mercedes to focus on refining its existing MB.EA platform to accommodate various powertrain options in the future.

Mercedes underscored their dedication to adapting to customers' changing requirements, affirming their mission to provide a customized Mercedes-Benz for every individual. Their strategy involves introducing a range of fully electric and electrified combustion engine vehicles through the 2030s, offering versatility in meeting market needs and maintaining a focus on innovation throughout their product range.

This suggests that Mercedes plans to offer its main models with both electric vehicle (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) options, following the lead of BMW and Audi. For the C-Class, this means that the existing model will be sold alongside the new one. Eventually, Mercedes will phase out their EQ naming format. Looking towards the future of the C-Class, early prototypes seen on public streets indicate that Mercedes is aiming for a more conventional design by repositioning the windshield back to its traditional place. This will result in a longer hood for potential storage space and may address criticisms of the driving position in larger EQE and EQS models. The new C-Class is projected to have a sleek, uncluttered body with a rounded rear end featuring a classic sedan trunk opening. Similar to the CLA Concept and its upcoming production version, the new C-Class will debut a fresh front-end design, ditching the current integrated light and grille in favor of a separate full-width light bar above a design element, replacing the traditional Mercedes grille. Other features, such as flush door handles, will resemble those seen in the current lineup.

While we can't yet provide precise technical details on the upcoming C-Class model, we can make some predictions based on its EVA2 platform. It is expected to feature lithium-ion batteries located beneath the cabin floor, a rear-mounted motor as standard, and the possibility of a front-mounted motor for higher trim levels to enable all-wheel drive capability. The battery sizes are likely to be smaller compared to current EQ models, but with a focus on efficiency improvements, the car may achieve a range of up to 400 miles on a single charge without requiring an oversized battery pack. Charging speeds could potentially reach up to 200kW on a DC fast charger, similar to current EV2-based EQ models.

Apart from the regular models, Mercedes is set to introduce high-performance AMG versions as well. One of these has been seen undergoing testing with 21-inch wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, gold calipers, and high-performance tires. However, the upcoming C-Class will not include an estate variant. Instead, it will be succeeded by a C-badged SUV set to debut before the new C-Class arrives next year.
