New Audi Q3 will finally be unveiled in less than a week

After nearly two years of teasing, the moment we've all been waiting for has finally arrived! Audi is set to unveil the all-new third-generation Q3 on June 16. Since its debut in 2011, more than two million Q3 units have found their way into the hands of eager drivers, and now Audi is ready to launch a model that promises to elevate the brand’s influential presence in the premium small SUV market. Competing against heavyweights like the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, Volvo XC40, and our favourite in the segment, the MINI Countryman, the new Q3 aims to dazzle with both style and substance. The first official glimpse reveals that it will showcase striking LED headlights featuring individual segments, echoing the look of the larger Q5 and Q6 e-tron. This innovative design allows drivers to customize their daytime running lights, while additional components handle the dipped and high beams.

Anticipation builds as the first examples of the next Q3 are expected to reach customers by the year’s end, with both the classic SUV version and the sportier coupe-like Sportback variant likely hitting dealerships simultaneously. Prototypes have already been spotted tackling public roads—and, amusingly, one even took an unexpected detour into a ditch during testing last year! Despite encountering some bumps along the road, we’re more than well-acquainted with the design direction of the new Q3. The front end is geared up to be bolder and more aggressive, borrowing stylistic cues from the recently launched Q5. A wider, more vertical grille flaunts a slick honeycomb pattern, flanked by sizable air intakes that promise to enhance aerodynamics. The rear of the vehicle will sport more rounded, curvaceous lines alongside slimmer lights, likely featuring a full-width LED lightbar that delivers a modern touch. The roof spoiler includes an additional brake light—much like the Q5—projecting onto the rear window for improved visibility during nighttime driving.

Expect the new Q3 to stretch longer than its predecessor, translating to extra cabin space that enhances comfort and versatility. Inside, the cabin will likely showcase Audi’s latest ‘Digital Stage’ architecture, with the ‘Virtual Cockpit’ and central touchscreen (both OLED screens) seamlessly integrated into a single curved panel before the driver. While the more budget-friendly Q3 might feature smaller displays compared to the Q5’s vast 14.5-inch touchscreen and 11.9-inch driver display, it will still embrace the cutting-edge infotainment system that Audi has become known for. Moreover, it will be built on a heavily updated ‘evo’ version of the MQB platform, which the Tiguan and Cupra Terramar also utilize, distinguishing it from the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) that supports the latest Q5, as well as the new A5 and A6 saloon and estate. The impending Q3 is poised to be among the final models from Audi to offer traditional internal combustion engines. Drivers will have a range of options including petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. If you're looking for a fully electric SUV from Audi, the slightly larger Q4 e-tron is available to meet those demands. Expect the Q3 to offer an engine line up similar to its mechanical sibling, the Tiguan, with 1.5 and 2.0-liter TSI petrol engines boasting 48-volt mild-hybrid technology for enhanced efficiency, as well as a robust 2.0-liter TDI diesel.

Entry-level models will likely feature front-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available as an option for more powerful variants. The plug-in hybrid system will mirror that of the Tiguan and Terramar, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and a lively 113 hp electric motor alongside a 19.7 kWh battery. With this combo, the Q3 PHEV is expected to deliver over 113 kilometres of pure-electric range while nearly reaching 300 hp. The high-performance RS Q3 was retired from the line up in 2023, but there's a potential for its comeback with the next generation, possibly powered by the impressive 394 hp five-cylinder petrol engine found in the latest RS 3 hyper-hatch.

Pricing for the outgoing Q3 starts from approximately €42,000, and with the added technology and sophisticated design of the new model, prices are likely to commence around €43,000. For context, the BMW X1 starts at €42,200, while the Mercedes GLA sits at about €41,800, with a refreshed model on the horizon. Rivals such as the Volvo XC40 and Alfa Romeo Tonale begin at €42,000 and €42,500, respectively. Meanwhile, the reigning champion, the MINI Countryman, is attractively priced from €34,000, presenting a tempting option in this competitive segment. Notably, production of the Audi Q2 will wrap up soon, with plans for a similarly sized electric SUV underway, but until then, the Q3 remains Audi's entry-level SUV!
