High-performance electric saloons have been led by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the Tesla Model S Plaid. Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics group, has now entered with the SU7 Ultra.
The figures are extraordinary. Xiaomi claims 0–100 km/h in 1.97 seconds and a top speed above 350 km/h, from three electric motors — two "V8" units and one "V6" — producing a combined 1,526 hp. Battery details are undisclosed, though it is expected to use the same 101 kWh pack as the Max version.
The engineering
Braking comes from six-piston AP Racing calipers on large ventilated discs. Combined with regeneration, Xiaomi claims up to 2.36 g of braking force.
CEO Lei Jun has said the SU7 Ultra will attempt the Nürburgring, targeting the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT's 7:07.55 set in August 2023. Despite a power advantage of over 400 hp, the Xiaomi is also lighter at 1,900 kg — 334 kg less — thanks to a carbon fibre body, composite chassis components and interior weight savings that include deleting the air conditioning.
Aerodynamically it generates 2,145 kg of downforce at 350 km/h, via a large fixed rear wing, a substantial diffuser, open wheel arches and a splitter routing air through the bonnet.
Xiaomi has called it a prototype and has not confirmed production.
Chinese manufacturers have attempted the Nürburgring before: Nio's EP9 set 6:45.9 in 2017, though on specialised tyres that excluded it from the production car record.
