There is a growing trend in high-performance electric sedans, with the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Tesla Model S Plaid leading the pack. Now, Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics giant, has entered the competition with its latest model—the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. Following the successful launch of the SU7 sedan, Xiaomi has unveiled the Ultra prototype, aiming to take on the fastest electric vehicles on the market.
The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra boasts impressive specifications, claiming an acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.97 seconds and a top speed exceeding 350 km/h. The vehicle is equipped with three electric motors—two ‘V8’ and one ‘V6’—delivering a total output of 1,526 horsepower. Although battery details have not been disclosed, it is anticipated to utilize the same 101 kWh unit as the Max version.
In addition to its powerful motors, the SU7 Ultra features an upgraded braking system with six-piston AP Racing calipers and large ventilated discs. Xiaomi claims that, when combined with regenerative braking from the electric motors, the Ultra can achieve up to 2.36G of braking force. This new electric sedan is poised to make a significant impact in the high-performance EV segment.
Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, shared on social media that the SU7 Ultra will be challenging the Nürburgring track to beat the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s record lap time of 7:07:55 set in August 2023. Despite having a power advantage of over 400 horsepower, the SU7 Ultra is lighter, weighing 1,900 kg—334 kg less—thanks to its carbon fiber body, composite chassis components, and weight reductions in the interior, including the removal of the air conditioning system.
To enhance its performance and agility, Xiaomi has designed the SU7 Ultra with an aerodynamic body that generates 2,145 kg of downforce at 350 km/h. This downforce is achieved through a large fixed rear wing, a substantial rear diffuser, open wheel arches, and a splitter that directs air through the bonnet. The SU7 Ultra is expected to take on the Nürburgring in October; however, Xiaomi has referred to it as a “prototype” and has not yet confirmed its production status.
Chinese manufacturers have previously attempted the Nürburgring challenge, with Nio’s EP9 electric hypercar setting a time of 6 minutes and 45.9 seconds in 2017. However, this record was achieved using specialized tires, disqualifying it from the production car lap record category.
