Previous generations competed directly with models such as the Audi RS 3, but the new CLA 45 enters a different league altogether thanks to a huge increase in power and performance. Pricing has yet to be confirmed for the EU, but it is expected to start at around €75,000, broadly in line with its predecessor.
The biggest change is under the skin. For the first time, AMG has equipped the CLA 45 with a fully electric powertrain. Even by today's EV standards, its 671bhp output is remarkable for a car of this size.
Performance figures are equally impressive.
The new CLA 45 accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, placing it firmly in hypercar territory. That's not far behind cars such as the Ferrari LaFerrari and Aston Martin Valkyrie, while also putting it on par with modern hybrid all-wheel-drive supercars including the Ferrari SF90 and Lamborghini Revuelto.
AMG achieves this performance using technology derived from the significantly more expensive AMG GT 4-Door. The CLA features three axial-flux electric motors developed in partnership with Yasa, a specialist electric motor manufacturer.
To preserve some of the traditional AMG driving experience, Mercedes-AMG has introduced simulated engine sounds alongside virtual gear shifts controlled via steering-wheel paddles. Rather than creating an artificial futuristic soundtrack, AMG says the system recreates the character of its previous turbocharged four-cylinder engine, including the familiar pops and crackles associated with performance exhaust systems.
The headline 671bhp figure is available in Overboost mode, while continuous output stands at 603bhp — matching the power of the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG E 63 S. Torque reaches an extraordinary 1,759Nm, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, increasing to 285 km/h with the optional AMG Driver's Package.
Power comes from a 94kWh battery developed specifically for AMG applications. Compared with the standard electric CLA, capacity has increased by 9kWh, while maximum DC charging rises to 330kW. Under ideal conditions, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes.
Mercedes-AMG estimates a driving range of more than 665 km for the saloon and around 637 km for the slightly less aerodynamic Shooting Brake. Those figures are particularly impressive considering the car's performance, although the CLA 45 remains a substantial vehicle, weighing close to 2.3 tonnes.
Aerodynamics have also received significant attention. Both body styles feature an active rear spoiler that remains flush with the body during normal driving before automatically deploying at higher speeds to improve stability.
Elsewhere, styling changes over the standard CLA remain relatively restrained. Larger wheels, revised front and rear bumpers and subtle aerodynamic enhancements give the car a more aggressive appearance without dramatically changing its overall design.
A closer look reveals wider front wheel arches and the removal of the full-width front light bar, bringing the CLA 45 more closely into line with the AMG GT 4-Door. The illuminated grille design has also been replaced by AMG's traditional Panamericana vertical slats.
Inside, the cabin receives several AMG-specific upgrades, including new performance bucket seats and exclusive graphics for the three digital displays spanning the dashboard.
The latest AMG steering wheel also makes its debut, featuring dedicated drive mode controls and rotary selectors integrated into the upper spokes.
