Jaecoo, a Chinese brand, is preparing to compete against established marques including Range Rover, Audi and Mercedes. The J7 SUV is already on sale, and the smaller J5 follows.
The company has named the Range Rover Evoque as a direct target, and intends to undercut it heavily — an estimated starting price of around €35,000 against an Evoque that costs roughly double.
What we know about the car
The first look comes from a design sketch released on the brand's social channels. Unlike the boxy J7 and the retro-styled J6, the J5 takes a sleeker profile aimed at the compact SUV segment.
Expected rear detailing includes a full-width LED light bar, a protruding spoiler, a faux diffuser and pronounced wheel arches.
For scale: the J7 sits close to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. The J5 is expected to rival the Volvo EX30 and Smart #1 in the electric crossover class.
Jaecoo has been deliberately non-committal on powertrain. UK executive vice president Victor Zhang has said the choice will be "based on what the customer actually wants".
A plug-in hybrid is expected, though it is not confirmed whether it will use the J7's configuration — a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with two electric motors for 197 hp and 290 Nm. The fully electric J5 is anticipated to use the same 61 kWh battery as the E5 from sister brand Omoda, giving roughly 400 km of range.
What this means for a buyer in Cyprus
The €35,000 figure is the whole argument, and it deserves scrutiny. At that price the J5 competes not with a new Evoque but with a three- to five-year-old premium SUV imported from the UK. That comparison is the one worth running, because the monthly cost of ownership rarely follows the sticker price.
Servicing and parts are the question nobody asks until it matters. Chinese marques are arriving in Cyprus quickly, but the aftermarket takes years to follow. Before committing, establish who services the car on the island, what the parts lead time looks like, and what happens to the warranty if the importer changes hands. A premium marque that has been sold here for two decades has an answer to all three.
Resale is the second question. Cyprus is a small market with long ownership cycles, and residual values for new entrants are unproven. A used premium import has a known depreciation curve; a first-generation Chinese SUV does not yet.
Road tax runs on emissions, not price. A fully electric J5 and a diesel Evoque sit in very different bands, which changes the annual cost more than most buyers expect. Run both through the road tax calculator before comparing purchase prices.
